Basically, a swashbuckler was some sort of arrogant prick who made a lot of noise by banging things to compensate for his lack o ability in swordsmanship.  However, through time, this word has gone from bad to good.  Thanks to the big screen, swashbucklers were seen in a new light.  They are now described as young, dashing, and debonair pirate heroes in search for hidden treasure and adventure.

A quick background on the term Buccaneer

It is already well known that basically a buccaneer is a pirate.  But to be more specific, buccaneers are actually pirates who roamed the waters of the Caribbean sometime around the late 1600s.  Most of them were your typical pilfering pirates who would steal and attack other ships as means to make a living.  However, although few and far between, there were some who were actually legal privateers.  This means that these buccaneers carried with them letters of marque.  A letter of marque gave them the right to attack ships and vessels of rival countries legally and in return these buccaneers would have to donate a portion of their loot to the government that issued them the letter in the first place.

But breaking it down to the very word itself, this term was derived from the word “buccan” which is comes from the West Indies, Arawak.  This Arawakan word referes to a wooden frame that is used for smoking meat and whatnot.  But buccaneer does not come from that alone.  It also comes from the French word “boucanier”. The two words are connected since a boucanier is actually a hunter who uses the buccan wooden frames.  Put two and two together and you have the word Buccaneer.

A brief background on Blackbeard

This infamous seafarer was not always feared by those sailing the sea.  Believed to be Edward Teach, he started out serving on a British armed privateer and was instructed to attack enemy vessels.  But he soon rebelled against his government and decided to take matters into his own hands as he took the wheel of a stolen ship into them as well and soon became captain of his very own boat.

This was the beginning of the reign of fear.  From 1717 to 1718, Blackbeard and his crew went on a pilfering rampage and frightened sailors of the seas, especially for merchants and the like.  These two years of terror finally came to an end when Maynard found out about Blackbeard’s hideout and attacked and eventually won the battle.  After the fall of Blackbeard, the head of this infamous seadog was hoisted on Maynard’s ship as a scare tactic to ward off other evil pirates.

Duties of a deckhand
