Duties of a deckhand

A deckhand is a crew member of a ship who usually does manual labor.  He has various tasks and chores that he has to do on a day to day basis.  These do not come easy.  He has to make sure that the ship is in tip top condition.  This includes painting, chipping, and grinding the whole ship from the floor to the ceiling.  He is in charge of any repairs that may be needed such as checking the oil, water, and fuel.  Of course cleaning the ship is a big part of the deckhand’s job.  This mainly requires a mop and bucket.   Cooking is but another part of his chores.  But not only does he make the meals, he has to keep a close eye on the food supply as well.  Basically, a deckhand is kind of like the all around man of the vessel.
