What Kind Of Plus Size Pirate Costume Is Available ?

Well, what kind of plus size pirate costume isn’t available should be the question as most standard sized costumes have a plus size option. In terms of plus size this means X large through to XXX large for most costumes. So you should have no problems finding your size.

For men, you have a few choices. You can be the pirate captain or a rating or crew man.

Typically the captain will have a full length jacket and elaborately designed hat. This costume looks a little plain to me and not as much fun as the ratings costumes. rogue pirateI particularly like the cut throat pirate and the rogue pirate outfits that look comfortable to wear and have equal measures of fun and menace to keep other party goers guessing. Be sure to get the sword and pistol to really get into the part.

The rogue pirate costume (to the left) has all the elements of a swashbuckling buccaneer. The long hair and bandana. Suede waistcoat and puffy white shirt. Striped pants and knee length boots. You can accessorize the outfit by adding things like an eye patch, facial hair, a parrot and of course a really big sword. Oh heck, why not get a pistol too.

For women there are basically three types of pirate costume themes and they all come in larger sizes.

The standard pirate costume for women is the high seas pirate. She  mixes it with the fellas and you wouldn’t argue with a cutlass like that in her hand. Apart from the weapon, she comes with a bandanna, waistcoat, sleeveless white chemise and burgundy skirt.

Background To The Costumes

Most of the costumes that you will find for pirates are set in the time that is often referred to as the Golden Age of Piracy. This was from middle of the 17th century through to the early 18th century. It is also the time that the pirates of the Caribbean movies are loosely based on. As the title of the movies suggests most of the real life action took place between the northeast coastline of South America and the coasts of West African and South Western Europe. And the hub of all these activities was centered around the Caribbean islands. Pirates tended to be British, Dutch and French and their prime targets tended to be Spanish Galleons, loaded with gold from the new continent, returning to Spain.

Pirates, especially British pirates tended to have a fluid allegiance to their country. Often they would be known as privateers and were given carte blanche by Britain to attack Spanish ships. This suited Britain as it saw Spain as a principle rival in Europe and anything to undermine it’s rival was encouraged. And it suited the pirates as they could amass vast amounts of gold and jewels by attacking Spanish ships. However as soon as Britain changed it’s mind about the legitimacy of the privateers actions, they would be outlawed and hunted down by the Royal Navy.
